About two years ago, I heard of this fabulous photographer named MeRa Koh. I began following her blog daily…religiously. I read every square inch of her website and watched her videos. She captured photos exactly as I wanted to. In my photography, I like to focus on capturing emotion. I love the interaction between people or even between a person and the camera. I love to capture what is happening at that point in someone’s life, not just the ‘smile and say cheese.’ Her photography embodies all of that.
I was so excited earlier this month when MeRa’s book, Your Baby in Pictures, was released. I had pre-ordered it and waited eagerly for the UPS man to bring it to me (Dakota waited eagerly too, the UPS man always brings him a bone).
And let me tell you, this book was everything I was hoping for, and MORE!! I thought the release of this book coincided perfectly with what is going on in my life – the book is about how to capture your baby’s first year in photos. Perfect, right? I knew I would be taking a lot of photos of Kelsy, I want to capture everything…and MeRa has some great tips and tricks on how to do that.
MeRa starts her book by discussing different types of cameras and has a quick tutorial on how to use them effectively. She also discusses some elements that make fantastic photos and how to capture them. Then it was on to photographing babies.
I began with the 0-3 month section because that is where Kelsy is. Rather than telling you about it, I am going to show you some of the photos that I took with MeRa’s inspiration.
I am particularly proud of this photo…the yawn. You don’t get all of Derek in the photo, but you do see how comfortable she is in daddy’s arms. This photo captures her big yawn as well as how she likes to be held the most (both elements described by MeRa). The reason I am so proud of this photo is because it was taken with no natural light. Just a bit of bounced flash.
It is so important to capture babies’ sizes when they are new because they grow up so fast. Here are a couple of examples:
I love the contrast here with daddy’s rough hands:
MeRa also talks about the storytelling element – which is HUGE to me (hence Life’s STORIES Photography). She has a photo almost identical to this one, which I thought was funny…I took this one about a month before her book came out…that means I’m doing something right! (Have you seen this photo before??)
I am so excited to capture some more photos using MeRa’s book as inspiration – and you can bet that I’ll share them with you. Here is MeRa’s book and the link where you can get it. It would make a perfect baby shower book!!
